Ray Parker Jr. - After Midnight (Geffen Records 1987)
After Dark is the fourth album by guitarist/singer/songwriter Ray Parker Jr. released on August 25, 1987 by Geffen Records. The album rose to No. 27 on the Billboard Top Soul Albums chart.
After Dark was produced by Ray Parker Jr., Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager. As a single "I Don't Think That Man Should Sleep Alone" rose to No. 5 on the Billboard Hot Soul Songs chart. A duet with Natalie Cole called Over You also rose to No. 10 on the Billboard Hot Soul Songs chart.
Ray Erskine Parker Jr. (born May 1, 1954) is an American musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer. As a solo performer, he wrote and performed the theme song for the 1984 film Ghostbusters. Previously, Parker achieved a US top-5 hit in 1982 with "The Other Woman". He also performed with his band, Raydio, and with Barry White in the Love Unlimited Orchestra.
Ray Erskine Parker Jr. was born in Detroit, Michigan, to Venolia Parker and Ray Parker Sr. He has two siblings: his brother Opelton and his sister Barbara. Parker attended Angel Elementary School where his music teacher, Afred T Kirby, inspired him to be a musician at age six playing the clarinet. Parker attended Cass Technical High School in the 10th grade.
Parker is a 1971 graduate of Detroit's Northwestern High School. He was raised in the Dexter-Grand Boulevard neighborhood on its West Side. Parker attended college at Lawrence Institute of Technology.
Parker gained recognition during the late 1960s as a member of Bohannon's house band at the 20 Grand nightclub. This Detroit hotspot often featured Tamla/Motown acts, one of which, the (Detroit) Spinners, was so impressed by the young guitarist's skills that they added him to their touring group. Through the Bohannon relationship, he recorded and co-wrote his first songs at age 16 with Marvin Gaye. Parker was also employed as a studio musician as a teenager for the emergent Holland-Dozier-Holland's Invictus/Hot Wax stable, and his "choppy" style was especially prominent on "Want Ads", a number one single for Honey Cone. Parker was later enlisted by Lamont Dozier to appear on his first two albums for ABC Records.
In 1972, Parker was a guest guitarist on Stevie Wonder's funk song "Maybe Your Baby", from Wonder's album Talking Book, an association which prompted a permanent move to Los Angeles. He also was the lead guitarist for Wonder when Wonder served as the opening act on the Rolling Stones' 1972 tour. In 1973, he became a sideman in Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra. Parker appeared briefly in the 1974 film Uptown Saturday Night as a guitar player in the church picnic scene.
Parker also wrote songs and did session work for the Carpenters, Bill Cosby, Rufus and Chaka Khan, the Supremes, Aretha Franklin, Deniece Williams, Bill Withers, Michael Henderson, Jean-Luc Ponty, Leon Haywood, the Temptations, Boz Scaggs, David Foster, Rhythm Heritage, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Herbie Hancock, Tina Turner, and Diana Ross.
Parker's first bona fide hit as a writer was "You Got the Love", co-written with Chaka Khan and recorded by Rufus. The single hit No. 1 on the R&B charts and No. 11 on the pop charts in December 1974. In 1976, he featured as rhythm guitarist on Lucio Battisti's album Io tu noi tutti, translated as "Me you and all of us".[citation needed] Parker has stated that he was the original songwriter of Leo Sayer's 1976 hit "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing", but that when he submitted the tune as a demo, his accreditation as such was missed.
In 1977, Parker created the R&B group Raydio with Vincent Bonham, Jerry Knight, and Arnell Carmichael. Raydio scored their first big hit with "Jack and Jill", from their 1978 self-titled album with Arista Records. The song reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, earning a Gold single and Gold album in the process. Their follow-up hit, "You Can't Change That", was released in 1979 from the Rock On album. The song was another Top 10 hit, peaking at No. 9 on the Billboard chart during the summer and selling a million copies.
In 1980, the group became known as Ray Parker Jr. and Raydio. The group released two more albums: Two Places at the Same Time in 1980 and A Woman Needs Love in 1981, both Gold albums. In 1981, Parker produced the hard funk single "Sweat (Till You Get Wet)" by Brick. During the 1980s, Ray Parker Jr. and Raydio had two Top 40 hits: "Two Places at the Same Time" (No. 30 in 1980) and "That Old Song" (No. 21 in 1981). Their last and biggest hit, "A Woman Needs Love (Just Like You Do)", released in 1981, went to No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and to No. 1 on the R&B Chart for two weeks that year.
On April 15, 2009, Parker's 118 theme song was made available as a downloadable ringtone from the 118 118 mobile website. In 2014, Parker appeared in the fifth episode of the first season of NBC's romantic comedy television series A to Z, singing the "Ghostbusters" theme song for a Halloween party.

(TL;DR Song is still relevant and damn is it mournful despite how beautiful it is) Despite being such a beautiful song it always manages to make me cry, not happy tears, sorrowful tears, what is it about this one that just immediately hits me like that? Even without the spoken intro the song still hits really hard in the feels but this version just destroys me, I feel like this is how it was always intended to be heard and you know what? It gives me a lot of context, people never really changed and at the end of the day even our problems never really changed, things have improved I suppose but nothing has been solved, despite Louis Armstrong being born over a hundred years ago now, the fact that the message is still relevant just hurts honestly. In an ideal world this song's message would still be appreciated but no longer relevant, it would be seen as a sadder time, a time when people had to hope and pray for a better world some day but nothing's changed, even after 100 years nothing has really changed, everyone was thinking the same things we're thinking now but those are the voices you never hear about it, when you look back on history all you ever see is negativity but this disproves the idea. I strongly believe that there have always been people against the wrong in the world no matter how long ago it was or how dire it was, it's never justified to hate everyone over one or two things because there were no doubt many who were opposed to it even at the time, you just never hear about them because they aren't the ones we need to learn from, it's the people who make mistakes, the people who do wrong that we need to learn from, learn from it so it can never happen again. Sorry for the long talk, when this song came to mind not too long ago, perhaps because I'm older now, I really had a lot of time to think of it, truly a mournful song for a world that isn't what it should be.

I met Nikki at 3 years Old at UES, playing hopscotch. She was fragile and cross eyed due to her premature birth, However, , , She did manage to finally succeed and looked me in the eye and said” Piss Frowka!” (Probably meant since I was physically, normal, I could, “ Piss off?” I laughed at that name but was happy and proud of her because she made it and deserved to be acknowledged cause she made it despite it.being 10x more challenging for her due to her disability. I was friends for life with her from that moment on and my mother asked me who my new best friend was she told me I said “ piss Frowka.” Happiness reigned and she was one of my best friends forever! 🌅Dawn of a New Era!❤️‍🩹🍯

My father was a big Satch-mo fan & he played this spoken intro version when I was a small lad back in the 60's or very early 70's - it's a lifetime ago & I don't remember for sure now. I only ever heard it, via my father's record, there & then. I've looked through his large collection of 78's - but I've never found it. May be I've mis-remembered. 😕 Anyway. It would be a fantastic, & poignant, thing for 'media' to play the full thing - spoken intro too - a lot more often as I feel that 'we' have become more, not less, arrogant & selfish since my father's generation, & his father's before him, fought & died to (allegedly!) save it. Just saying. 😐

Yes indeed it is a wonderful world. Jehovah our God created it and said it is good. Because Satan entered into it and caused the downfall of the human destruction; we still have the promise of an everlasting life that Jehovah our God has made to us. Let us all keep the our eyes on the prize.
